Two Fremont teens won top awards in the Pacific Grove Art Center 2022 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. The pair is now automatically entered into the national competition, making them eligible for cash awards and college scholarships.

According to Fremont’s Melissa Doub, of the nearly 1,400 regional entries, just 5 students achieved the Gold Key with American Visions Nominee status.

Both of the Fremont winners are Mission San Jose High School students:

Joshua Shi, senior, Film & Animation: Orbit
Nicholas Zhang, sophomore, Drawing & Illustration: Smile of an Ageing Man

The other three regional American Visions Nominees are Noah Chin of Oakwood School in Morgan Hill, Mia Hu of Albany High School in Albany, and Grace Yujin Kim of Robert Louis Stevenson School in Pebble Beach.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have been awarded since 1923. Previous winners include such luminaries as Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol.

Each year 16 Gold Medal Portfolio recipients receive $10,000 each, and 30 Silver Medal with Distinction Portfolio recipients receive $1,000 each.
